After a seven-year hiatus, the Governor’s Cup U-18 Basketball Tournament is back—bringing together 44 teams from towns and cities across Cebu and giving young Cebuanos a provincewide stage to compete, develop their talents and experience the values that sports can teach.
Gov. Pamela Baricuatro formally welcomed the young athletes during the opening ceremony at the Mandaue City Sports Complex, emphasizing that youth development must go beyond the classroom.
“When we talk about developing our youth, we often talk about education, opportunities, and preparing them for their future. But I believe sports must also be a big part of that conversation,” Gov. Pam said.
For the Governor, sports provide young people with a positive environment where they can stay active, build friendships, discover their abilities and learn discipline, teamwork, resilience, respect and sportsmanship.
On the basketball court, she said, young athletes learn that competition does not have to mean bringing others down.
“Pwede ta maningkamot nga mahimong pinakamaayo, pero respetohon gihapon nato ang atong kontra. Mao kana ang healthy competition.”
Gov. Pam also underscored the importance of creating more opportunities for Cebuano youth to play, train and belong to a team—giving them positive activities, mentors and goals worth pursuing.
Basketball, she noted, is already deeply rooted in Filipino and Cebuano communities. From covered courts to simple hoops in barangays, it is a sport that young people already love. Through the Governor’s Cup and the Province’s broader sports development efforts, Cebu hopes to discover promising talent from its towns and barangays and provide young athletes opportunities to develop further.
“And who knows? Among the young players standing on our courts today may be Cebu’s next great athletes,” she said.
The tournament, organized by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission, offers ₱500,000 to the champion. Gov. Pam also announced an additional incentive: the winning team will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Manila for tune-up games, giving the young athletes another opportunity to test and develop their skills.
Members of the Provincial Board, mayors, Capitol officials and Cabinet Secretary Benjamin Abalos also joined the opening.
As competition begins, Gov. Pam reminded all 44 teams that the Governor’s Cup is about more than the final score.
“Pildi man o daug, basta gihatag ninyo ang inyong best ug nagdula mo nga adunay respeto ug sportsmanship, naa gihapon moy madala gikan niini nga experience.”
Her challenge to Cebu’s young athletes was simple:
“Duwa ta. Lingaw ta. Magtinahuray ta. Ug ipakita nato unsa ka-maayo ang kabatan-onang Sugboanon.” 🏀💜
