Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro led provincial officials in formally opening the month-long celebration of Cebu Provinceβs 457th Founding Anniversary during a solemn ceremony held at the Capitol flag-raising program on Monday, August 3.
The anniversary celebration recognizes Cebuβs rich history and legacy as the countryβs oldest provincial government, with activities lined up throughout the month to commemorate its founding and continuing progress.
The observance is anchored on Republic Act No. 7698, as amended, which declares August 6 of every year as a special non-working public holiday across the Province of Cebu, including its highly urbanized and component cities.

Joining Gov. Baricuatro during the opening ceremony were Vice Governor Glenn Anthony Soco, members of the Provincial Board, district representatives, local chief executives, and vice mayors from different areas of the province.
Also present were Capitol department heads led by Provincial Administrator Ace Durano, provincial and regional directors of national government agencies, and guests from various sectors of Cebu.
Cebu Province was officially established on August 6, 1569, when King Philip II of Spain appointed Miguel LΓ³pez de Legazpi as its first governor, marking the beginning of what is recognized as the oldest provincial government in the Philippines.

For 457 years, Cebu has played a significant role in the countryβs history, culture, economy, and development. The anniversary celebration highlights the provinceβs enduring heritage while recognizing the contributions of Cebuanos toward its continued growth.
The month-long celebration serves as an opportunity to honor Cebuβs past, celebrate its achievements, and strengthen the shared commitment of government leaders and communities toward a more progressive future.
