More than 800 Barangay Animal Health Aides (BAHAs) from various parts of Cebu gathered Tuesday, August 18, for the BAHA Congress 2026, highlighting the important role of community-based animal health workers in protecting the provinceβs livestock and poultry industries.
Organized by the Cebu Provincial Government through the Provincial Veterinary Office, the congress was held at the IEC Convention Center and featured lectures and learning sessions designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of BAHAs.
The gathering brought together animal health aides who serve as frontline partners of local governments in monitoring and addressing animal health concerns in their respective communities.
Through their work at the barangay level, BAHAs help support livestock and poultry raisers, monitor animal health conditions, and coordinate with veterinary authorities when concerns arise.
Strengthening Cebuβs animal health network
The BAHA Congress serves as a venue for BAHAs to gain additional knowledge and practical information that can help them perform their responsibilities more effectively.
The lectures focused on strengthening their capacity to contribute to animal health protection and agricultural development, particularly at the community level.
With Cebu having a significant livestock and poultry sector, the provincial government continues to recognize the importance of maintaining a strong animal health network that reaches communities across the province.
BAHAs play an important role in this system because of their direct connection with farmers and animal raisers in the barangays.
Recognition of BAHA associations
Aside from the learning sessions, BAHA associations from Cebuβs different local government units were also recognized during the congress.
The recognition highlighted their contributions to animal health initiatives and agricultural development in their respective communities.
The provincial government said the efforts of BAHAs are vital in supporting the provinceβs agricultural sector and ensuring that animal health concerns are addressed as early as possible.
Their work also helps strengthen coordination between barangay communities, local governments and veterinary authorities.
Gov. Baricuatro to join gathering
Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro was expected to join the gathering later in the day to deliver an inspirational message to the participating animal health aides.
Her participation underscores the provincial governmentβs continuing efforts to strengthen support for Cebuβs agricultural communities and the workers who help sustain them.
The BAHA Congress 2026 also provides an opportunity for participants from different municipalities and cities to exchange experiences, learn from one another and build stronger partnerships in addressing animal health concerns.
As Cebu continues to develop its agricultural sector, strengthening the capabilities of frontline animal health workers remains an important component of protecting livestock, poultry and the livelihood of farmers across the province.
The Cebu Provincial Government, through the Provincial Veterinary Office, continues to work with local governments and community-based animal health workers to promote better animal health practices and strengthen agricultural resilience throughout Cebu.
